Skiing Aspen: Resort Facts
By Mary Chris from ALLTrips.com
But in order to make the decision on where you’ll go for the days allotted to your ski vacation, you’ll need some facts and figures on which to base that decision.
Aspen Mountain
Located just outside of Aspen on Colorado 82, you’ll find the premiere ski resort of Aspen Mountain. You may spot some of the international jetsetters here in this fabulous area, taking to the slopes. You won’t find beginner runs at Aspen Mountain. There are only the intermediate and advanced runs, so you get the freedom that experienced skiers and snowboarders love.
You will marvel at the views from the gondola as you move to the top of Ajax Mountain, and you’ll find the world’s first skier-only terrain park. With 673 acres, 3,267 of vertical drop and 76 runs, this is one place you can’t miss if you are a more experienced skier.
Terrain is 48% more difficult, 26% most difficult and 26% expert.
Aspen Highlands
You can really enjoy the incredible vistas of the Maroon Bells from Aspen Highlands. This challenging terrain will have you coming back for more. It’s my pick of the best place to go for the experienced skier. The backside bowl and steeps and glades are exciting to say the least.
The intermediate and advanced skiers arriving at Aspen Highlands will find uncrowded lifts and runs where you have free reign. The lift service is fast so you have to be in good shape to last the whole day through. You get an intense workout by skiing the Highland Bowl, which has been a crown jewel of this resort for years. Now it’s improved with better lift service.
You have 1,028 acres and a 3,635-foot vertical drop. Of the 119 trails, the longest is three and a half miles. The trails are rated as 18% easiest, 30% more difficult, 16% most difficult and 36% expert.
Snowmass Ski Resort
Snowmass Ski Resort is an exhilarating resort for visiting on your next ski vacation. Numerous improvements are underway or completed at Snowmass to make it even more inviting. I already thought it was one of the best, but the on-mountain improvements have made it even better.
Besides a wonderful snowboard pipeline, you’ll find miles of groomed cross-country trails available for your adventures. The Roaring Fork Valley is a white landscape and only a few miles from Aspen. Snowmass also has its own little village where you will find quaint boutiques and restaurants offering the finest food.
Lots of room! Explore the 3,132 acres and 91 trails! With the most vertical drop in the United States of 4,406 feet, you’ll find this the most thrilling resort around. Try out one of the terrain parks (there are three) and the steeps of KT Gully and the Cirque.
You have 6% beginner terrain, 50% intermediate, 12% advanced and 32% expert.
Buttermilk Ski Resort
Of course, where do the beginners go to get their chance on the slopes? Buttermilk Ski Resort is smaller than its neighbors, but focuses heavily on beginners as well as snowboarders. Here you’ll find the world’s longest terrain park (2 miles), with more than 30 rails.
Just outside of Aspen on Colorado 82, you’ll be happy to know that the skiable acres are 435, with a vertical drop of 2,030 feet. The 44 runs are rated 35% easiest, 39% more difficult and 26% most difficult.
Prices
When you buy lift tickets, they are good for any of the four resorts, Aspen Highlands, Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk and Snowmass. Adult tickets are for one day - $82, four days - $308 and five days - $380. Youth tickets (13 to 17 years of age) are one day - $74, four days - $284 and five days - $340.
